We’ve got some performance dates to tell you about…
Saturday June 7 we’ll be hosted by Bob Stane at Coffee Gallery Backstage in Alta Dena, CA. This is a return engagement for us and we’re looking forward to getting back down to Southern California and this very unique and wonderful venue.
The next day, Sunday June 8 we’ll be in Morro Bay, CA at Coalesce Bookstore. This will be our collective first appearance there, while each of the ‘Dudes has appeared there previously with other groups. If you have not been to a show at Coalesce, you missed something special!
Saturday August 2 a little later in the summer, we’ll be in Carpinteria, CA at the Palm Loft Gallery for an unplugged (really, no PA!) evening show. Only room for about 30 people at this one, which makes it very living-room like… always a pleasure to play the Palm Loft.
The BONUS for the ‘Dudes and those who attend any of these three dates is our having the pleasure of fiddler Paul Lee joining us. Paul is a terrific fiddler and all around musician and a pleasure to play music with. We’re stoked.
Whereever an item is highlighted in this post, they are links that will take you to the respective venue websites so you can get the contact information and details for the show, including how to purchase and reserve your tickets.
We look forward to seeing you!

Band members are:
Kenny Blackwell – mandolin, guitar, vocals
Mike Mullins – guitar, mandolin, vocals
Wally Barnick – Fender bass, vocals
Kenny Blackwell is a master mandolinist as well as guitar player, on both acoustic and electric guitar. He was a mandolin student of the great Jethro Burns whose teaching methods must have been fantastic, to hear Kenny tearing it up these days. Kenny was the featured mandolin player with The Laurel Canyon Ramblers for many years. He is now an in-demand session player and keeps a full calendar playing with at least a half dozen bands in and around the Central Coast of California.
Mike Mullins is also expert with the mandolin and guitar. He is close pals with David Grisman and was in fact an invited guest on Grisman’s closing set at the Fall 2011 Strawberry Music Festival. Mike is a featured instructor at Grisman’s annual Mandolin Symposium held each year at UC Santa Cruz in Northern California. Since 1993 Mike has played guitar and is a featured vocalist with the well known California acoustic group The Cache Valley Drifters.
Wally Barnick is an old rock & roll guy who caught the acoustic music fever in the ‘70’s and looks, hopes and is grateful for any invitation to play with the fabulous pickers that he has been fortunate to sit in with over the years. Wally made three European tours with the renowned music group Bluegrass, Etc. and is a featured vocalist on their award winning album “Home is Where the Heart Is.” He too, is currently and has been a member of the Cache Valley Drifters, dating back to 1975.
Hay Dudes released their self titled and first album in August 2012.

The ‘Dudes will play a private event in Santa Barbara County this coming weekend as we’re invited to help in celebrating a wedding. Meanwhile Kenny is visiting family, while Mike and Wally respond to a number of recent house concert inquiries. They are coming from both northern and southern California and after the usual calendar juggling we should have some 2014 dates to share with you soon. It’s very nice to have these calls coming in and we’re looking forward to getting out there for more shows. Thanks to all for your kind words and encouragement. Cheers!

Now, that was really fun! The four Hay Dudes dates over the past weekend were all and more than we had hoped for. Thanks Dennis Caplinger for joining us. The bar certainly gets raised whenever Dennis’ fiddle and banjo are added to the mix. As usual, there was a bunch of laughter and today we’re in recovery mode. Thanks also to everyone who attended the shows. It was great to see old pals and to make some new ones.

Hey, dudes and dudettes, guess who’s playing four shows this week? Yeah, it’s The Hay Dudes—Kenny Blackwell (mandolin, guitar), Mike Mullins (mandolin, guitar), and Wally Barnick (Fender bass)—three guys who’ve been friends and musical collaborators for 35 years and who sing amazing harmony vocals together on their bluegrass and beyond repertoire. Even better, they’ll be joined on this four-date mini tour by master multi-instrumentalist Dennis Caplinger, whose impressive resume includes album and live performance appearances with Eric Clapton, JJ Cale, Byron Berline, Chris Thile, Kevin Welch, Vince Gill, Chris Hillman, Rita Coolidge, and more! They’re touring in support of their self-titled album. Some shows are close, but a couple are a little out of our area. See them Thursday, Oct. 10 at Steynberg Gallery in SLO; Friday, Oct. 11 at The Barn in Gilroy (e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org for this house concert); Saturday, Oct. 12 atPainted Sky Studios in Harmony; and Sunday, Oct. 13 at the 42nd Annual Old Time Fiddlers’ Conventionin Goleta (fiddlersconvention.org). Prepare to be “wowed!”
Folks, this thing has been in the works for nearly a year. This coming week the Hay Dudes have got four concert dates, including two in San Luis Obispo County that include our pal Dennis Caplinger joining us on fiddle and banjo. The first show is on Thursday October 10.
As some of you know Dennis was featured on the album and it is a rare thing indeed to pull him away from his endless commitments and have him along with us for these dates. We love playing as a trio, which is the norm, but when we have the pleasure of that fourth piece it’s like adding that just right spice to the recipe!
Please see the date(s) and venue contact details on the attached poster, make your reservations early and we hope to see you at one (or more!) of the shows. Cheers!

The Hay Dudes are very pleased to have these dates on the calendar, particularly because our good friend and superb instrumentalist Dennis Caplinger will be joining us, providing his sterling accompaniment on fiddle, banjo, and dobro. You can hear Dennis on several of the tracks on the Hay Dudes cd. Check out his fiddle-fireworks on track # 11 Every Time I Roll The Dice! We hope to see you at one (or more!) of these events. Please save a date… and by all means, SHARE the news!
